The Step Is Doing a Job

Every house has a damp proof course: a barrier built into the wall specifically to stop moisture rising from the ground into the structure. The step at a garden door exists to keep the finished level of the patio comfortably below that damp proof course, and to give rainwater somewhere to go that isn't your living room. Take the step away without addressing what it was doing, and you haven't solved a problem, you've created one. It tends to announce itself later as a damp patch, a swollen skirting board, or water pooling against the door in heavy rain.

This is what gets missed when a level threshold is treated purely as a paving decision. It isn't one. It's a structural relationship between the house and the garden, and the level of the paving is only half of what protects that junction.

If the Level Can't Protect the Threshold, the Drainage Must

Once the ground outside sits close to the level of the floor inside, gravity alone is no longer keeping water away from the door. Something else has to do that work. In practice, that means several things working together, not one clever trick.

A Drainage Channel at the Door

A slot drain or drainage channel set immediately outside the threshold intercepts water before it reaches the door rather than after. It has to be connected to somewhere water can genuinely go: a soakaway, a surface water drain, existing site drainage. A channel with nowhere to discharge to simply overflows at the door instead of short of it.

The Threshold Itself Is an Engineered Product

Modern level-access door systems aren't ordinary doors with the step ground off. The better ones are built with their own drainage detail into the threshold profile, giving water that gets past the outer seal a designed path back outward rather than in. Which system suits a particular opening and house is something to work through with the manufacturer's specification for that exact product and site.

Paving That Falls Away from the House

Even with a good drainage channel and an engineered threshold, the paving itself should always fall gently away from the building, never towards it and never dead flat. The eye reads a level threshold as flush and seamless; the surface underneath is doing quiet, careful work to send water the right way.

The Damp Proof Membrane, Designed In

Where the patio meets the wall, there's a relationship between the paving build-up and the house's own damp proofing that has to be planned deliberately, not improvised once the slabs are half laid. This is a builder's detail, and it needs settling before a single stone goes down.

Why This Isn't a Paving Job

I'll say this plainly, because it's the most useful thing I can tell you: a genuine level threshold isn't something a landscaping team can just turn up and build from a photograph. It's a designed junction between the structure of your house and your garden, and it properly involves the builder responsible for the wall and damp proofing, the door manufacturer's own threshold specification, and, for most projects of this kind, Building Control. Exactly what that involvement looks like depends on your house, your existing floor levels and the door system chosen, and it needs confirming for your specific project rather than assumed from an article like this one.

As a designer, I coordinate that conversation. I bring the garden design, the levels and the drainage strategy, and make sure they're talking the same language as the people responsible for the building itself. Presenting it as a weekend of laying slabs would be an easy sell and a genuine disservice.

Easier to Build In Than to Retrofit

If you're extending the house or replacing the doors anyway, that's the moment to raise a level threshold, because the floor levels, the door specification and the drainage can all be planned together from the outset. Retrofitting one onto an existing patio and existing doors is possible, but it's a harder, more constrained job, working around levels that already exist rather than designing them from scratch.

The Maintenance Nobody Mentions

A slot drain only works while it's clear. Leaves, grit and garden debris find their way into any channel over time, and a blocked drain at a level threshold doesn't just stop draining somewhere convenient. It stops draining exactly where the water was always meant to have somewhere else to go, right at your door. A well-designed level threshold gives you genuine, easy access for clearing that channel, and it's a job that actually needs doing rather than left for some hypothetical future weekend. This is where I've seen otherwise well-built thresholds fail years after installation, not because the design was wrong, but because nobody kept it clear.

When a Single Step Is the Honest Answer

Sometimes, once we've looked properly at the existing floor levels, the door position and what the site can support, the right advice is a well-designed single step rather than a full level threshold. It isn't always what a client hoped to hear, but a step done well, generous, well-lit and clearly edged, is a perfectly good answer. Telling you that honestly, before any drainage goes in, is worth more than talking you into a detail your house genuinely can't support.

Getting It Right

A level threshold patio door is one of the most worthwhile changes you can make to how a garden connects to a home. It just needs treating as what it is: a piece of designed building detail, not a paving choice. Get the drainage, the threshold and the levels working together as a single plan, keep it clear, and it has every chance of doing exactly what you wanted it to do for a very long time.
